Ten of 12 club teams from Pac-12 schools, five of them ranked in the MCLA Top 25, will gather at UCLA this weekend for the annual Pac-12 Shootout taking place Saturday and Sunday at the North Athletic and Intramural fields.
Arizona State (No. 3), Stanford (No. 11), California (No. 14), Oregon State (No. 19) and Arizona (No. 23) were listed in the preseason MCLA Top 25. Among ranked Pac-12 teams, only Colorado (No. 2) and Oregon (No. 8) are missing from the Pac-12 Shootout schedule, which features a couple of excellent matchups between ranked opponents.
Saturday’s opening game features No. 14 California vs. No. 19 Oregon State at 9:30 a.m. At noon, No. 11 Stanford takes on No. 3 Arizona State. At noon Sunday, No. 23 Arizona faces the No. 19 Beavers. Local clubs UCLA and USC, along with Utah, Washington and Washington State fill out the program.
Last season, five Pac-12 teams reached the MCLA national tournament, with Colorado eliminating Arizona State 5-4 in the semifinals before falling to Colorado State in the national title game, 7-2.
With weather forecasts calling for mostly sunny and mid-70s temperatures — a far cry from early-season college lacrosse on the east coast — this would be a great opportunity to get an early look at some of the teams with potential to reach the 2014 MCLA national tournament in Orange County in May.
Admission to the Pac-12 Shootout is free.
